Home energy efficiency has become a huge priority for homeowners in Toronto, Mississauga, and the GTA. So it’s no wonder that energy upgrades and retrofits top the list when it comes to home improvements. For homeowners considering attic insulation in Mississauga, Toronto, and the GTA, several home energy rebates are currently available. The good news is that Ontario’s rebates can be quite substantial.
While some energy rebate programs are income-based, others are based on the home’s heating source, and even others are based on the type of retrofit undertaken. Eligible retrofits include everything from attic insulation, to basement insulation, to comprehensive air sealing.
In determining eligibility for Ontario energy rebates, it’s smart to have a professional assessment of the home in the form of an “energy audit”. This is often a pre-requisite for rebates. An “energy audit” is typically followed by recommendations for upgrades and appropriate retrofits.
With the Home Efficiency Rebate, homeowners can receive up to $5,000 when undertaking TWO or more energy efficiency upgrades. As an example, a homeowner installing attic insulation in Mississauga would begin with an initial energy assessment by a Registered Energy Advisor. This would highlight various upgrades to lower energy bills and improve home comfort.
After the initial energy assessment, TWO of the recommended upgrades must be completed (by an accredited contractor). When all the work has been successfully completed, a “final” energy audit is performed, at which time the rebate paperwork can be submitted. Ontario homeowners can choose to install basement insulation, exterior wall insulation, or attic insulation.
With poor levels of energy efficiency in a home, electricity bills can get quite expensive. As such, the Home Assistance Program offers energy-efficiency upgrades (FREE) specifically for income-eligible homeowners (as well as tenants). Here again, an in-home energy assessment is required to uncover areas where energy efficiency can be improved.
For residents in Toronto, Mississauga, and the GTA, there are various upgrades available through the Home Assistance Program. Basic upgrades would include ENERGY STAR® devices and smart thermostats, while more substantial upgrades would include attic or basement insulation as well as in-depth weather-stripping (by an approved contractor).
The Affordability Fund is designed for Ontarians who pay an electricity bill. This program is intended to ease the burden of electricity costs. In some cases, ENERGY STAR® devices (and appliances) are available in order to improve energy efficiency and thus reduce electricity costs. This fund is for those who cannot afford energy-saving upgrades.
For homes that are electrically heated, a professional Home Energy Advisor performs an on-site assessment to highlight various deficiencies that require correction. This is followed by certain recommendations for energy efficiency upgrades that would reduce energy costs and improve indoor comfort. Home insulation may be one of those upgrades.
