Cellulose vs. Batt Insulation: Which Is Better for a Toronto Attic?

When homeowners compare cellulose attic insulation Toronto install against traditional batt insulation, cellulose is usually the stronger fit for older homes or irregular attics, since it's blown in as loose fill and settles into gaps rigid batts leave exposed. The right choice comes down to your shape and how airtight your attic is already. At EcoComfort, our trusted attic insulation services focus on blown-in cellulose insulation for strategic installation, optimal coverage, and enhanced R-value and energy efficiency.

Thermal Performance

Loose-fill cellulose conforms around wiring, framing, and obstructions, closing small gaps where batts often leave air pockets. Those gaps are easy to miss during a quick visual check, but they're exactly where heat tends to escape in winter and enter in summer.

Settling

Cellulose settles slightly after installation, which installers account for in the fill depth by adding extra material upfront. Batts hold their shape but can sag or gap if cut or compressed incorrectly around obstructions, which is a common issue in attics with a lot of framing or wiring to work around.

Moisture

Both materials need a dry attic to perform. An evenly distributed loose-fill product can make uneven moisture patterns easier to spot during a follow-up inspection, since a change in how the material settles or compresses in one area can be a visible clue that something's worth a closer look. Batt insulation can hide the same kind of moisture issue underneath an intact-looking surface, which is worth keeping in mind if a leak or condensation problem develops later.

Fire Treatment

Cellulose is treated with a fire retardant during manufacturing, a step batt products don't share. This is one of the more concrete material differences between the two options, rather than a matter of installation preference.

Installation

Blown-in insulation Toronto crews typically complete in a few hours with minimal mess, while batt installation requires precise cutting around every joist and obstruction. For attics with a lot of framing detail, that difference in installation approach can also affect how evenly the final coverage turns out.

Cost Factors

Material and labour vary by attic size, so an in-person assessment gives the most accurate comparison for your specific home. Many cellulose upgrades also qualify for the Home Renovations Savings Rebate, an Ontario rebate program available to Enbridge Gas customers and Ontario-grid-connected homeowners that EcoComfort participates in as a contractor. No energy audit is required, and attics starting at R-12 or below are eligible for up to $1,250 back. See the rebate page for full eligibility and how to apply.

Attic Conditions

Attics with recessed lighting, lots of wiring, or irregular framing tend to benefit most from a loose-fill product that reaches every space without hand-cut panels. A straightforward, unobstructed attic is a case where either material can perform well, which is part of why an in-person look at your specific attic matters more than a blanket recommendation. Older Toronto homes, in particular, tend to have more of the irregular framing and obstructions that favour a loose-fill approach.

Very efficient service from quote to the completion of the job 2 days later. Thanks to EcoComfort, we now have baffles in our two attic spaces as well as insulation that went from extremely poor (builder's quality of 4") to R60. We're extremely happy with the work done and would not hesitate to recommend EcoComfort. Thank you very much!!

I'm very pleased with EcoComfort. I called them for an attic insulation top up. After the first phone call, someone came to have a quick look at my attic. A few weeks later, two men and their truck came and increased my attic insulation from R21 to R60 with blown-in cellulose. I appreciate that they use Canadian materials (Climatizer Plus). The work only took a few hours and they left everything just as they found it, nice and clean. My house feels a little cozier now with the added insulation. Thanks a lot!

I had a wonderful experience with the Ecocomfort team. I originally hired them to top up my builder-grade insulation from 8 inches all the way up to 24 inches which is approx R-70 and they did a fantastic job. A huge shout-out to the entire team including Arnold, Patrick, Daniel, Louis, Adam, and Paul. Every one of them was friendly, professional and efficient.

Very unusual these days to find a home contractor who in fact lives up to or exceeds their claims and online revues. Wojtek was prompt, courteous, extremely knowledgeable and very patient.........he answered all my questions. Patrick, his brother and his two colleagues arrived on time, were careful and tidy, did an excellent job and cleaned up beautifully. I was skeptical of the purported benefits of adding attic insulation but during this recent late summer heat wave I have not required air conditioning during the day and only a bit overnight. Aside from potential future energy savings, the benefits were immediately evident. I would highly recommend Ecocomfort to anyone considering anything they do.

For 800 sq ft attics - EcoComfort Insulation price was HALF what 2 other insulation contractors quoted me. Very professional starting from the quote (Wojtek) - who explained the process, to the guys who did installation, very efficient and professional, - vacuumed and cleaned afterwards - can't wait to see how it retains the heat on these colder evenings. Highly recommend them.

Tom and co. were amazing!! They just completed the job within 3hrs and I had zero insulation to begin with so it was a big job. They were truly professional, cleaned up after the job and walked me through the inspection. Ontop of that, they also helped fix a small leak in the roof which they noticed during the job!! That's service beyond and above and truly appreciated!! Looking forward now to having warmth in the bedrooms this coming winter and would definitely recommend EcoComfort to anyone! You guys are awesome...

We had a great experience with EcoComfort. Arnold attended our home to provide us with a quote, and he explained the whole process and answered any questions we had. The insulation itself went well- two workers came to do the job. They cleaned up afterwards. We already notice a difference with our second floor feeling less hot in the summer heat now that we have our attic insulation done!

I hired EcoComfort Insulation after researching the more labour-intensive option to replace the batting by hand. It was like a mountain range of pink batts in the attic which was honestly a bit terrifying. Patrick sent a crew with a truck which sucked the old, dusty, pink stuff out and blew in new R60+ cellulose. I am so happy I went with this installation method and it was well worth spending the extra money.

I had Eco Comfort in recently to blow in new insulation after we had recently taken down and installed a new ceiling. Everything went very well. Everything from getting the quote, scheduling the work, and the team coming out went very smoothly. Everyone was very friendly and the crew did a great job. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

The guys did a spectacular job in removing the old insulation and replacing it with cellulose. They were friendly, efficient and professional. They also installed a bathroom roof vent for better air circulation AND installed weatherstripping for our attic hatch. After work was done, they cleaned up the minimal dust that occurred and left our place as if they were never there. This company provides awesome service. Hire them!
